3 Times You Need to Stay Productive at Work - The Muse

3 Times You Need to Stay Productive at Work - The Muse 3 Times You Need to Stay Productive at Work The greater part of us would most likely be lying in the event that we said we've never relaxed at work. That we've never overcome all our completely should dos, looked at our should-do rundown and thought, Nah, I'm going to head home early. Even the hardest specialists merit those days. Be that as it may, there are likewise a couple of conditions in which you shouldn't drift at work, regardless of whether nothing appears to be up and coming. Since when you do kick up your feet in these examples, you risk making every other person's carries on with harder. Furthermore, that doesn't make anybody think too affectionately of you. In this way, before you go into voyage control, here are the absolute most regular instances of deceivingly loosening up minutes at the workplace. 1. At the point when Your Deadline's Months in The Future In the event that your venture isn't expected when you wrap up this article, I'm not advising you to drop every one of your arrangements for now to complete it. Be that as it may, despite the fact that it feels like you have constantly on the planet to finish the work, it's additionally simple to get excessively OK with procrastinating for another event. All things considered, you most likely have all the more squeezing assignments to complete properly this second. (For example, a supper or yoga.) Be cautious, however. Once more, I'm not encouraging you to wrench the undertaking out at this point. In any case, you ought to make a plan for the day that spreads out all the fundamental advances and you ought to append a timetable to each progression. By doing that, you may find that it'd be a colossal advantage to yourself to begin now. Not exclusively will this lessen your pressure, however it will likewise show your chief and partners that you won't abandon them. 2. At the point when Everyone Else Is Getting Ready to Head Out At the point when you see everybody around you getting together for the end of the week, it's anything but difficult to accept you can do likewise. It's considerably increasingly basic to imagine that regardless of whether something is expected right this second, no one's going to peruse it today in any case. Obviously, you may be correct. Yet, in all actuality your colleagues could all exit for the day right currently realizing that they will get some information about your deliverable first thing tomorrow first thing. I'm not going to mislead anybody. Colleagues have guaranteed things to me on days when everybody around the workplace is taking a load off and as a rule, I didn't think that its important to catch up until the following day. Be that as it may, there have been a lot of different occasions in which I required something on a Friday evening, just to be forgotten about to dry. So regardless of whether you have an inclination that the individual you're working with won't react to you promptly, if it's expected, it's expected. What's more, seeing your associates taking off for party time drinks is definitely not a valid justification not to remain gainful. 3. At the point when You're Looking for a New Job There are most likely companions out there understanding this and thinking, Rich, you are Exhibit An of drifting when you needed another gig. And for those of you who knew me when I was more youthful, I'm not here to disclose to you that you're off-base. Truth be told, I'm composing this now as a result of the errors I made when I was searching for an exit from past organizations. Regardless of whether you have a feeling that you will stop whenever your supervisor sends you an aloof forceful email, that doesn't give you permit to begin loafing in your present position. This isn't to imply that you shouldn't search for something new. A remarkable inverse, truth be told. Be that as it may, take it from me-you'll feel a lot prouder of yourself on the off chance that you end this activity on the most elevated note conceivable. There are numerous motivations to do that, yet one major childish one is that your associates could end up being important associations not far off. Furthermore, it's moronic to cut off a tie since you're over your activity. There are events grinding away when it's impeccably OK (and important) to take your foot off the pedal. In any case, there are additionally circumstances in which they're not exactly as great of a thought as you might suspect. Before you cool off, see what you have going on. In the event that nothing crucial is expected and things around the workplace are somewhat remiss, feel free to participate. Be that as it may, in the event that you have a responsibility, finish on it, regardless of whether it implies working somewhat harder than you might suspect you have to.

5 reasons why Danish workers are the happiest in the world - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

5 reasons why Danish laborers are the most joyful on the planet - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog You will frequently observe Denmark recorded as one of the ?most joyful nations on earth.? Curiously Danes are not just cheerful at home, they?re additionally upbeat at work and as indicated by most investigations of specialist fulfillment among countries, the most joyful representatives on the planet are in Denmark. Here?s only one information point: Gallup found that 18% of American laborers are effectively separated, which means they are ?sincerely disengaged from their working environments and less inclined to be profitable.? A similar number for Danish laborers is just 10%. Be that as it may, for what reason are Danish laborers such a great amount of more joyful than their partners the world over? Here are five crucial contrasts that clarify whats going on. 1: REASONABLE WORKING HOURS I once conversed with an American who had found a new line of work as a director at a Danish organization. Needing to demonstrate his value, he did what he had consistently done and placed in 60 to 70 hours per week. Following a month, his chief welcomed him to a gathering. He was completely hoping to be adulated for his difficult work, however rather he was asked ?Why accomplish you work to such an extent? Is something incorrectly? Do you have a difficult appointing? What would we be able to do to fix this?? Some non-Danes wonder if Danes ever work. In addition to the fact that Danes tend to go home at a sensible hour most days, yet they likewise get five to about a month and a half of get-away every year, a few national occasions and as long as a time of paid maternity/paternity leave. While the normal American works 1,780 hours and the normal South Korean 2,024 hours out of each year, the normal Dane just works 1,408, as indicated by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) insights. Danes additionally have more relaxation hours than some other OECD laborers and the connection between adequate recreation and satisfaction is settled in the examination. The distinction to different nations is unmistakable. Numerous organizations around the globe praise exhaust as an indication of duty. ?You need to place in the hours? is the message in the mixed up conviction that the more hours you work, the more work you complete. We call this ?The Cult of Overwork.? Danish organizations, then again, perceive that representatives additionally have an actual existence outside of work and that working 80 hours seven days is terrible for the two representatives and the reality. 2: LOW POWER DISTANCE In numerous nations, if your manager provides you a request, you essentially do what you?re told. In a Danish working environment, amazingly barely any immediate requests are ever given and representatives are bound to see them as proposals. Dutch humanist Geert Hofstede has evaluated the way of life in excess of 100 nations on a few boundaries, one of which is ?power separation.? A powerful separation implies that managers are undisputed lords whose each word is law. Danish workplaces?with a score of 18-have the most minimal force separation on the planet. Only for examination,? Belgium has a force separation of 65, China times in at 80 and Malaysia holds the world record at 100. By law, any Danish work environment with in excess of 35 representatives must open up seats on the board for representatives. This implies Danish representatives experience more independence and are progressively enabled at work. Here?s only one model: By law, any Danish work environment with in excess of 35 representatives must open up seats on the board for workers, who are chosen for the board by their friends and serve on an equivalent balance and with same democratic forces as all other board individuals. 3: GENEROUS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS In Denmark, losing your employment isn't the apocalypse. Truth be told, joblessness protection appears to be unrealistic, surrendering laborers to 90% of their unique pay for a long time. In the U.S., for example, losing your employment can without much of a stretch lead to money related fiasco and loss of medical coverage. This prompts work lock for example remaining in work you despise on the grounds that you can?t stand to leave. Basically: If you?re a Dane and you don?t like your activity, you can leave that place of employment without gambling genuine money related issues, compelling organizations to treat their representatives well or hazard losing them. 4: CONSTANT TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Since the mid-1800s, Denmark has concentrated on long lasting training of its laborers. This approach proceeds right up 'til the present time, with an amazingly detailed arrangement of government, association, and corporate strategies that permit practically any worker who so wants to go to paid preparing and get new aptitudes. It?s called a ?functioning work showcase strategy,? what's more, Denmark spends more on these kinds of projects than some other nation in the OECD. This lets Danish laborers continually develop and create and causes them remain pertinent (also remain utilized) even in a changing workplace. It additionally makes their employments more extravagant and all the more intriguing. 5: A FOCUS ON HAPPINESS Here?s a word that exists just in the Scandinavian dialects: Arbejdsgl?de. Arbejde implies work and gl?de implies satisfaction, so arbejdsgl?de is ?bliss grinding away.? This word isn't in like manner use in some other language on the planet. Numerous individuals around the globe detest their occupations and believe this to be completely typical. For example, where we Scandinavians have arbejdsgl?de, the Japanese rather have karoshi, which implies ?Death from exhaust.? Furthermore, this is no occurrence; there is a word for it in Danish since Danish working environments have a long-standing convention of needing to fulfill their representatives. To most Danes, an occupation isn?t only an approach to get paid; we completely hope to have a ball at work. In different nations, the disposition towards work is regularly totally different. A couple of years back I gave a discourse in Chicago, and a group of people part revealed to me that ?obviously I abhor my activity, that?s why they pay me to do it!? Numerous individuals around the globe abhor their occupations and believe this to be entirely ordinary. Likewise, numerous work environments around the globe do pretty much nothing or nothing to make bliss among representatives, adhering to the way of thinking that ?If you?re having a good time, you?re not buckling down enough.? THE UPSHOT I?m doing whatever it takes not to paint Danish organizations as utopias for laborers and their universal partners as domineering hellholes. There are awful Danish work environments and heavenly non-Danish ones?Zappos and Google are two that I?ve by and by visited and examined. In any case, examines have revealed various foundational and social contrasts among Denmark and the remainder of the world that serve to clarify why Danish specialists are on normal so a lot more joyful. This goes a long ways past joy. We know from any number of studies that glad laborers are progressively beneficial and inventive and that thus, upbeat organizations have more joyful clients and get more cash-flow. This may help clarify why Danish specialists are among the most gainful in the OECD and why the Danish economy keeps on doing so well. The individuals in power wouldnt tune in (Churchill is accounted for to have been truly irritated with this baffled researcher and his blushing vision of global joint effort) and the virus war followed. I appreciate Bohr for being happy to propose such a thought at such a period. He accepted he was correct, and worked for his goals. I additionally respect him for having the virtuoso to understand, that the response to keeping away from an atomic weapons contest (either between superpowers or, much more unnerving, between rebel countries) isn't one-sided activity, this can just originate from worldwide participation precisely what the universes heads are acknowledging today. I want to move. Where in the world do I begin - Copeland Coaching

I want to move. Where in the world do I begin Have you thought of moving, but just arent sure where to begin? A number of the people Ive met lately are thinking of just this idea. There are a few main reasons they want to relocate: There arent many jobs in the city where they live The economy is looking up and there are more opportunities to chase after Theyre looking for something different in terms of lifestyle. Whatever your reason, moving can be equally intimidating. If youve moved before, chances are good that it was when you went away to college, or for your first job after college. Back then, youd move to any city. You didnt have as many preferences yet. You moved to where the job was. But now, you want to move somewhere warm or somewhere closer to family or to a bigger city or to a small town. You probably have two or three cities picked out as targets. But, you have no idea how to move to one of those cities. Here are a few tips to get you started: Select your target cities. Do your homework here. Think about whats important to you. Is it schools? Crime? A political party affiliation? List out what you want out of a new city, and find out which cities best fit your needs. Visit the cities. Before selling your home and closing up shop, visit the cities youre thinking of moving to. Scout out neighborhoods. Spend time there. Verity you really would like to consider moving there. Get connected. Find ways to get involved in your new city, even though you dont live there. This can be tough for a lot of people. In college, your activities and peers were nicely packaged inside one campus. As a professional, getting connected is a lot more work. Check out sites like Meetup.com and look for activities that interest you. Start saving. Years ago, relocation was pretty standard especially for corporate jobs. Heck, I even received relocation as an intern. But, in todays market, many companies dont budget for relocation. If youre really set on moving, start putting together your own relocation fund. You may need it. Leverage your existing contacts. If you already know people in your target city, take the time to connect with them. Find out if theyd be willing to help you. And, if you dont have many contacts, make new ones. A great place to start is with recruiters. If youve never worked with a recruiter or headhunter, you may not know where to begin. Last week, I took a trip to Dallas, Texas to learn more about the hot job market there! On tomorrows Copeland Coaching Podcast, I interview Sarah Brown, a recruiter based out of Dallas. Sarahs firm, PrideStaff Financial, specializes in accounting and finance opportunities in the Dallas area. Sarah shares her tips on how to connect with recruiters. 3 Simple Ways to Make Your Resume and Cover Letter Work Together -

3 Simple Ways to Make Your Resume and Cover Letter Work Together - When composing a resume, your activity isn't simply to compose an astonishing archive yet additionally make a stunning part known as the introductory letter. Once in a while work searchers overlook that these two archives cooperate, particularly on the off chance that theyve composed a resume, and are then told at last they need an introductory letter. Since the two are interlaced its a smart thought to ensure that they are without a doubt functioning admirably together. Here are some straightforward tips to consider as you compose both your introductory letter and resume for accommodation: Ensure the Fonts Match As little an issue as this may appear, recruiting directors notice if your resume is written in a blend of Georgia and Arialâ€"and your introductory letter is written in Courier New. Despite the fact that this distinction isn't really going to be a major issue, it is something that could stand apart to a supervisor who is searching for consistency between reports so as to decide how genuine you are about scrupulousness. So to err on the side of caution, set aside some effort to guarantee that your introductory letter text style coordinates the overwhelming textual style in your resume. Ensure the Information Matches The exact opposite thing you need is for a recruiting director to find out about employments or encounters in your introductory letter that you dont notice in your resume. This is the reason its significant that you set aside some effort to make another introductory letter with each resume so the entirety of the data coordinates and is custom-made to the situation for which you are applying. The data in one ought to consistently coordinate the other. In the event that it doesnt, it will look just as you hurriedly put together records to submitâ€"which is an impression you certainly dont need to give. Utilize the Same High-Quality Paper On the off chance that youre going after a position the conventional wayâ€"by presenting a resume and introductory letter on paperâ€"its critical to ensure the two archives are imprinted on a similar top notch paper. 3 Psychological Hacks to Give You an Upper Hand When Asking for a Raise

3 Psychological Hacks to Give You an Upper Hand When Asking for a Raise Chances are that you already know that psychology goes a long way in sales. You may have also heard how psychology helps when you’re networking. But did you know that you can also use psychology to better your chances of getting a raise? A quick note here, knowing about psychology is not about manipulating the other person into get what you want. It’s about knowing how the mind works so that you can ease situations that can cause a lot of anxiety while getting others to collaborate with you. Use our tips below to give yourself an upper hand when asking for a raise. Using their own words to describe their problem. In sales and marketing you’re taught to use a prospective client’s own words to remind them of why the need your product or service. You can use the same concept when asking for a raise. For example, perhaps you know the company is looking to open up a new office overseas and have run into some issues like struggling to find employees. Perhaps your boss has even mentioned it during meetings. When asking for a raise you can bring up the issue and then explain how you can fix the problem. The key here is to use their own words. So if your boss has mentioned, “Wow we’re really having a hard time finding qualified people to open up our new office in China” then you would use the exact wording when you bring it up. The reason it’s so effective to use their own words is because it will create familiarity between the two people. The detail also triggers much more emotion than saying something general like “The company is having recruitment issues.” Then you can provide examples of how you’ve already handled issues like this and can continue to do so, therefore making you a valuable asset to the company and worthy of a raise. Mirror their body language. In addition to using your boss’ own words, you can also mirror their body language. The concept of mirroring is pretty simple: when asking for a raise use body language that is similar to the other person’s. This creates a sense of familiarity, trust, and comfort because when someone behaves like us we tend to automatically assume that they are actually like us. In other words, if you’re asking your boss for a raise while mirroring their body language, they will see themselves in you therefore making them more accepting of your request. It creates empathy and takes your boss’ mind off of numbers, budgets and more logistical excuses they may have otherwise thrown your way. Limit their options. Limiting people’s choices is a well-known persuasion technique. Simply put, when making a proposition it’s very easy for someone’s mind to start creating a myriad of alternatives to said proposition. Rather than letting their mind wander give them only two options: your proposition or something less desirable. For example, either you get a raise or you take another offer you have on the table. Or, either you get a raise or they continue having major issues (such as the recruitment example). This technique is obvious, but it works if you don’t overdo it and actually bring something valuable to the table. Be Well! Lisa

How To Make A Great Start In A New Job

The most effective method to Make A Great Start In A New Job I was as of late asked: How would I get looking extraordinary so far in my new position, and position myself for senior administration in the near future? This was asked by somebody going into a center administration job at another organization, as a major aspect of my Ivy Exec online ace class, and honestly, this applies to us all achievers. Here are the five inquiries I figure you should have the option to reply so as to be effective. 1. What is achievement? You must discover from your chief and your announcing line how they characterize accomplishment in your main goal; what is your central goal? At that point, also, you must ask yourself: 2. What are the conditions that I have to have set up with the goal for me to be fruitful? These may be things like assets staff, colleagues, financial plan, space. Or it may be time â€" what amount of time would you say you will be given? What amount of time do you have and data transmission, are there sure things you have to appoint? It may be formal acknowledgment; do you have to have a specific title, or be a piece of specific boards of trustees, so as to be effective? Or on the other hand, inward acknowledgment â€" for me, I required my manager to stand up and state, Indeed, this is May's new crucial, I anticipate that everyone should co-work. At the point when you know these conditions, haggle for them. Arrange implies locate the sensible arrangement of things that you need and afterward have the option to clarify them and position them with regards to making the business effective. Along these lines, it's not about a rundown of requests, yet it's plunking down with your chief and together, on a similar side of the table, taking a gander at this basic goal of accomplishment. What should be set up and how would you set up that. At that point, the third inquiry is: 3. What is my key methodology? You must consider your own qualities, the scene, how those two can meet up in your marketable strategy. Regardless of whether you're requested a marketable strategy or not, I suggest assembling one. It very well may be one page, two pages, three pages, however the advantage of that is your manager will see you being vital, you can be counseling others too, and they will purchase in additional accordingly, and you'll have an archive that you can allude back to as a touchstone. In all honesty, it's additionally going to assist you with making sense of how you need to discuss your business and your strategic a way that is drawing in and dynamic. 4. Who are my key partners? You need to outline individuals out guide out the individuals that are higher ranking than you, individuals that are peers, individuals that are junior, and furthermore outside customers. At that point it's significant that you go and really meet with them. More often than not you will meet one on one. I'd suggest you do this when you can, arranged by need, ideally, and that you are there so as to tune in, more than you talk, to get familiar with the consideration and taking care of the individual and their gathering, and to discover things like: What are their needs? How would they see accomplishment in your job? What do they anticipate from you? What's more, what exhortation do they have for you as you're beginning? Likewise, significantly, get authorization to return to them and have a further discourse, and bob thoughts around; that will be extremely significant, that you keep on building that relationship. At that point, fifth inquiry, significant, is: 5. By what means will I cut out 'sacrosanct time'? Holy time is two things. One is the time that you need so as to might suspect, plan and plan, and that is time away from the coal face and the commotion of the customary day. The second sort of consecrated time will be a great opportunity to deal with yourself your own psychological and physical prosperity, regardless of whether that is care, work out, contemplation. So you truly should cut out those bits of hallowed time before you do whatever else, and calendarize them, regularize them, make them propensities. You'll see from another post that I did on the 5 Mistakes That Almost Sank Me, that I was not excellent at this last one, yet now I know it's very significant. So it's best that you ask yourself and answer these five inquiries before you authoritatively start, however to be perfectly honest, it's rarely past the point of no return, and we ought to consistently be routinely returning to these inquiries in any case. It's an iterative procedure. It's about advancement and not flawlessness. So now, over to you. What tips would you be able to share about getting looking incredible so far in another job? I couldn't imagine anything better than to hear.

5 What The Heck Business Ideas That Made Millions

5 What The Heck Business Ideas That Made Millions You write up a plan, work your socks off and go to the investors pitch. You have a brilliant idea but it doesnt sell and nobody invests in it, calling the business idea ridiculous! Well, you might want to direct their attention to this post. 5 What The Heck Business ideas that made millions shows you just anything sells once you try it and get the word out there. Ranked from what I think is the least WTH to the most WTH business idea that made millions. 5. Wacky WallWalker Toy Your mum sends you a toy from a foreign land and you being you start playing with it. Soon you realise the ideas potential and voila! you have a business idea. Thats exactly the story of Wacky WallWalker Toy. It is an octopus-like toy with several sticky feet. You would throw it on the wall and it would walk down  slowly. In 1983 Ken Hakuta in the US bought the rights for Wacky WallWalker Toy for $100,000 and eventually sold 240 million of those to make an estimated $80million. Sweet! 4. Doggles Dogs with goggles? Yeah, why not.  Doggles  is a commercial brand of  sunglasses  for  dogs  in the form of tinted  goggles  designed to fit the shape of a dogs head. Doggles were invented by Roni Di Lullo after she noticed her dog, Midknight, squinting in the sunlight. It was voted as one of the Most Useless Inventions in 2009 by Daily Mail. Yet, they were sent to the military dogs in Iraq. Costing around $80, they rake in millions a year. 3. Million Dollar Homepage The only reason I think milliondollarhomepage is more ridiculous that Doggles is because it made just over a million and required zero effort! Absolutely zero. Each pixel on the site was sold to advertisers for $1. Alex Stew, studying at the University of Nottingham came up with this idea in 2005.  Tew bought a web domain, laid out an area of 1,000,000 pixels, and sold them in 100-dollar blocks.  By New Year’s Eve, every pixel bar but one had been sold. Tew make a whopping $ 1,037,100 gross. And he is still going strong! 2. Pet Rock In April 1975, Dahl was in a bar listening to his friends complain about their  pets. This gave him the idea for the perfect pet: a  rock.  A rock would not need to be fed, walked, bathed, groomed and would not die, become sick, or be disobedient. He said they were to be the perfect pets, and joked about it with his friends. That was it, Pet Rock was born and even though the craze only lasted a year, it made Dahl a millionaire in 6 months. Beat that! 1. Flowbee A Vacuum Cleaner that Cuts Your Hair Do I have to say more? It literally is just that. In fact, you can still buy one. The technical description of how it works needs no less understanding than that necessary to comprehend how a gas turbine engine operates, except this one goes with a lot of laughter. This revolutionary home haircutting system cuts your hair evenly into the recessed blades and trims it precisely. The results are a refreshing vacuum haircut. You Bet! Thats all folks. And now, if you will excuse me, I need to think of a WTH idea that will make me a millionnaire! Image Credit: ReadWrite.com 33

How I get myself back on track

How I get myself back on track So, I guess I took a week off from my blog in order to launch my company. It wasnt planned that way, believe me. Every day I told myself that Id blog the next day. Surely many of you know this feeling. The feeling of having been lied to. By yourself. When I am sucking at my job, the usual problem is a slowdown in my ability to process information. In general, Im fast. I am pretty sure that most people who read blogs are faster than the general population at processing information. I have no research to prove this, but I do notice that when I recommend to people that they read blogs, people often say that its too much information to process. So, anyway, the times that my information-processing ability slows down is when theres a wrench in my system. Like launching a new company. When I noticed that Im drowning in my job, here are things I do to try to get on top of the information flow: 1. Model myself after my information-processing idols. Example: Gina Trapani, of Lifehacker fame, once told me that on days shes behind she deletes all the days feeds from the 100+ blogs she keeps track of. Her ability to delete inspires me. I started deleting stuff. 2. Look for shortcuts. I am usually really good at reading a wide range of blogs. But I deleted everything new that came in this week. And then I got nervous that it is lame to spew new information if I am not taking in new information. And then I found out about Guy Kawasakis new site, Alltop, which is great for spinning through a lot of good blogs quickly. I found the site because Guy asked me which career blogs I like. And then, nearly overnight, he launched career.alltop.coma list of links from the biggest career blogsand you know how I know Guy knows which blogs are good? Because my blog is in the number-one spot :) 3. Have a fit. Then I went to Philadelphia, to convince a software developer that his current job is a dead end and he should work at my company. And while I was there my computer broke. And I couldnt check email. Or blogs. Or deal with brazencareerist.com. So I called Ryan and told him to change our financial projections to include $150,000 this year to make sure that my computer doesnt break. And I told him to spend another $200,000 to buy me a Blackberry and a Blackberry specialist to travel with me everywhere I ever go so it never breaks. Then I ordered room serviceyou know, pizza and ice cream for $50 plus tip? And I have to say the room service order definitely made me calm while I was on the computer in the hotel lobby checking my email. So maybe the key to being a good information synthesizer is an all-out fit with an ice cream chaser. Because look, I blogged. And I think Im back on track.

What to do when you get hit with writers block - Debut

What to do when you get hit with writers block - Debut Writers block. The foul dust that floats in the wake of my dreams, the joy-sucking parasite that pings my career back to square one like a bungee rope As a content creator, writers block is the barrier Ive had to hurdle time and again without respite. Even as a student, there was no escaping it. Weve all been there, havent we? You hold down the backspace key for an eternity. You ball up another piece of paper, Steph Curry it into the wastebasket and draw for yet another clean slate. We all think a fresh start will help ideas flow more freely, but were wrong. This is my 5th attempt at writing this very introduction. But as I prepared to surrender myself to the abyss, consummate in the belief that if I cant write articles I no longer have any purpose in life, I came across  this Guardian column by psychology writer Oliver Burkeman. And it seems that the greatest trick that writers block ever pulled was convincing us that it really exists. The best way to beat writers block is to tell yourself you dont have it No kidding, denial isnt just a river in Egypt. In the piece, Burkeman explains renowned psychologist Paul Sylvias take on the whole thing. That essentially, writers block is nothing more than “a description masquerading as an explanation.” What does that mean exactly? Well, really it means that writers block is all in your head. See, when you give a name to a feeling like so-called writers block, you give that feeling what Sylvia describes as object power. It becomes a solid obstacle that needs agency to overcome as opposed to what it really is: a momentary lapse in creativity that will eventually pass. “People can overthink themselves into deep dark corners, and writer’s block is a good example,” Sylvia says. Hence why its important to not get caught up in the semantics of it all. Heres just a few of the ways you can beat that feeling. Step away.  When you run out of ideas, its so tempting to sit staring at your laptop or notebook, mouth agape, waiting for something genius to come along and fish-slap you in the face. Its actually much better if you let your mind wander away from the task at hand. Thats when the good ideas strike. Read something.  Stimulate your brain with words by reading something, ideally something that has nothing to do with what youre writing about. You never know which word is gonna set off an unstoppable train of thought down Brain Funk Railroad. If you prefer film dialogue or song lyrics instead, be our guest. Write down all your mind trash. Got an idea of what to write but just cant find the right words? Try adopting Anne Lamotts eloquently named Sh*tty First Drafts Method. Write down everything that pops into your head, no matter how formless or nonsensical. You can always edit it down later and there might be some gems among your mental diarrhoea. And importantly, never feel like youre doing this because you have writers block. What that really is, is you just not writing. All it takes is for you to be in the right mental space. Trust me, its all in the mind.  Download Debut  and connect with us  on  Facebook,  Twitter,  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

5 Phrases on Your Resume that are Killing Your Job Hunt

5 Phrases on Your Resume that are Killing Your Job Hunt 24 Flares 24 Flares Natasha Hodgson  is a careers and entrepreneurship enthusiast, currently working as Community Manager for vibrant internships and jobs platform  Enternships  (@enternships). . . There aren’t a lot of situations where you can totally control your own first impression. An impromptu meeting? Nightmare. His name’s Kevin, not Steven, and it turns out you’re wearing a Spongebob tie. A sexy date? So much worse â€" though to be fair, there’s no way you could have known the tablecloth was flammable. The point is, we should rejoice when we actually get to control how we come off to people we want to impress. And that’s why resumes are great. A soft-focus, well lit version of you, ready and gleaming to blow the socks of everyone it winks at. Except a lot of people don’t see it that way. Rather than exclaiming with loud relief “WELL, BLOW ME DOWN, BALL’S IN MY COURT HERE”, a lot of people see a resume as something to suffer through; just grit your teeth, close your eyes and follow diligent procedure. And what a waste. Don’t forget, the people reading your resume are people. People with brains and blood and senses of humor and are probably bored because it’s Thursday and they have to do the HR on Thursdays. They are crying out for originality, for spark, for verve. And dammit, you’re going to give it to them. And that means leaving out the usual garbage. Ready? 1.  â€œI’m a hard worker/I work well in a team/something else  meaningless Imagine you’ve been hit by a car (that’s right, this is how careers advice works), and someone has run up to you shouting “I think I can help here!” Overriding pain aside, would you want their next sentence to be “because I’ve always worked hard on tasks given to me!” or “because I am a qualified physician!” The point is, everyone works hard. Everyone works well in a team. Everyone is diligent, everyone is a good listener, everyone tries their best. So what? This is about what genuine, quantifiable skills you can bring to the table â€" facts, percentages, figures, proof. So don’t waste your time with the self-evident nonsense. 2. “Responsibilities included…” Trying saying the words ‘responsibilities included’ out loud, without accidentally sighing and sitting down in a big chair. You can’t, it’s physically impossible. The words “responsibilities included” implies a load of work that was heaped upon you, that you were passive in taking on, that you got over and done with without any attempt at thinking in new, fresh ways or expanding your horizons. Don’t think of a resume as a list of the activities you’ve been up to for the past few years â€" think of it as a platform to proudly trumpet your achievements. That’s ACHIEVEMENTS, not responsibilities. Again, it’s about quantifying your value, whipping up passion, energy and proving your brilliance. 3. “My objective is to find…” No offense, but they don’t care what you want. Not yet. At an interview, they might care what you want. Right now, they just want to be impressed by you. This is not about your future, it’s about your past â€" don’t waste precious resume space in waxing lyrical about the bright lights ahead. Lay down why they should want to meet you, and you can do all of that impressive ambition stuff when you’ve got their eager faces in a room. 4. “In my spare time, I play the bugle and gently shape bamboo” Full marks for trying to gesture vaguely towards your personality. But every scrap of information on this document should reinforce how brilliant you’d be at the job you’re applying for. Bring out your personality in the writing of the resume itself, imbue the whole thing with the type of person you are â€" don’t tack it on at the end as a vaguely bizarre afterthought. It’s useless. 5. “References available on request” “Thank God she put that on the end there, otherwise I probably would have assumed there was no one on this green earth who would vouch for her.” It’s redundant. It’s lazy. It’s boring. It’s everything you don’t want to come across as. Let the self-evident stuff be self-evident, and use the space you have to pack in how great you are. At the end of the day, you’re a real human being. And so is the person you’re trying to impress. Remember that, and you’re golden. Just try not to set anything on fire this time.

LinkedIn is Key to Attracting Recruiters

LinkedIn is Key to Attracting Recruiters Whether you’re currently unemployed or you have a job and are starting to covertly look for a new one, LinkedIn is a valuable resource for you. Recruiters are constantly searching on the platform to find the candidates they think would fit the opportunity they have available. When you optimize your LinkedIn profile in the right way, your name will show up in the searches more often than not. Simply having a profile isn’t good enough nowadays, so working with a professional LinkedIn profile writer can help take yours to the next level. Complete Your Profile During your LinkedIn profile development, you’ll see a status bar on the right hand side of the page telling you how complete your profile is. Follow the basic steps to make your profile 100% complete. The reason is because completed profiles are more visible in searches, and will be more attractive to recruiters. Sometimes you might only get to 85 or 95%. Dont sweat it if that is where you are at. Often times, LinkedIn wants you to include things that just dont make sense to add (in my case early experience that was basically waitressing while in college). Think About What Recruiters Search For Once you’ve completed the basics of your LinkedIn profile development, it’s time to take it to the next level. Using keywords and buzzwords relevant to your job or industry throughout your profile will make your profile show up more often in searches. One secret Ive learned from recruiters is they often don’t search for job titles, since titles can vary among different companies. Instead, recruiters search for specific skills and expertise, so those are more important than trying to match a title to what you think a recruiter wants to see. While you want to make sure all of your skills are displayed, you also want to make sure the text in your profile flows naturally. Always Develop Your LinkedIn Profile While LinkedIn may indicate your profile is complete, you should always look for ways to develop and enhance it. A professional LinkedIn profile writer may suggest being active on your profile at least weekly or more often if you’re in the middle of a job search. This doesn’t mean you have to do a complete overhaul, but it could simply mean joining a new relevant group and making new connections in the group. There are many ways to optimize your LinkedIn profile, and all of them are important for attracting the attention of recruiters. Make sure that even if you become employed, you stay active on LinkedIn meaning commenting or posting. You dont want to neglect your network, you want to nurture it. Professional Resume Services looks at the big picture of job searches, while also focusing on the tiniest details. Your executive resume is a critical part of your job search, but LinkedIn is quickly becoming equally important. With the competition for high-level jobs being at an all-time high, attracting recruiters is more critical now than ever before. No matter where you’re at in your job search, don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you need any advice or tips.
